Brand owners and retailers I spoke with at the Summit agreed that there is considerable confusion about the use of plastics in packaging, and how to address sustainability in packaging.
Busting packaging myths
Plastic is a highly effective, robust material. For that reason, plastic packaging protects products used every day by consumers. Its ability to preserve sensitive products such as food and medication using very little material is a key strength. But as the use of plastic becomes more widespread, so does the confusion about its use in packaging and how we can manage plastic packaging in a more sustainable way.
Here, I get to grips with four of the most widespread myths about plastic packaging.
Amcor Sustainability Director Dr. Gerald Rebitzer discussed these plastic packaging myths with brand owners and retailers attending this year’s Sustainable Retail Summit, an event run by the Consumer Goods Forum. He also examined whether packaging and the circular economy can ever co-exist in his blog for the Consumer Goods Forum.
