Protecting the health of our planet is key to building a better future for generations to come, which is why we actively participate in initiatives that reduce environmental impact and improve lives.
In an effort to expand access to safe drinking water in underserved areas, 22 volunteers and their families from our Haina site in the Dominican Republic partnered with the Wine to Water Foundation to bring clean water solutions to the community of El Pomier.
El Pomier, home to around 100 families, faces growing challenges around water access. Once reliant on deliveries from a nearby mine, the community must now purchase all household water independently. Mining activity near the culturally significant Pomier Caves — known for ancient Taino rock art — also threatens local groundwater supplies, increasing the urgency for sustainable solutions.
The day began with an interactive WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) experience. Through engaging, hands-on stations, volunteers and residents explored the realities of water scarcity and the steps that can be taken to overcome it. In the afternoon, our volunteers led a session on the multi-barrier approach to water safety, followed by the distribution of 35 high-quality water filters. These filters will enable families to treat rainwater or trucked-in supplies, reducing dependence on costly water deliveries and improving overall quality of life.
Jorge Mario Pérez, Plant Manager at our Haina site, shared his reflections:
“As Plant Manager, I’ve led many projects but this one had a special impact. Seeing how a single water filter can transform a family’s life, bringing them health and dignity, reminded me why we do what we do at Amcor.”
Verónica Posso, Development, Engagement and Communications Leader for Colombia, Central America and the Caribbean, added:
“Participating in this day and connecting with the El Pomier community, not only brought our team together, it connected us with the real-world impact of our work: helping to improve lives.”
Thanks to the dedication of our Haina team and the strength of our partnerships, this initiative marks more than a single day of service, it’s a step toward lasting impact.
