In August, we announced our partnership with Michigan State University’s School of Packaging. Amcor is planning to invest over $10 million to help the school further its high academic standards, enable facility modernization upgrades and establish an Endowed Chair of Packaging Sustainability to fund facility upgrades.

Recently, our Vice President of Sustainability, David Clark, sat down with Dr. Muhammad Rabnawaz, Assistant Professor at the School of Packaging, to record a podcast and find out more about how the partnership will empower the next generation of packaging professionals.
The building upgrades will allow the school’s 600 students – 70 of whom are graduate students – to have access to state-of-the-art technology as they gain an understanding of the packaging industry.
Many future packaging professionals undertake engineering or material science degrees, which can provide very in-depth knowledge around one specific aspect of the industry and allow students to develop materials for packaging and non-packaging applications.
For students who are passionate about joining the packaging industry, however, a specialized degree can provide a more complete picture. In addition to learning about the materials used in packaging, students also gain an insight into the health and safety requirements for different sectors, such as food and healthcare. There’s also a large focus on all stages of the packaging lifestyle, from distribution to end of life, which is increasingly important as the industry works to make all packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable.
Many of the students at MSU’s School of Packaging go on to work at leading companies, and Amcor boasts a number of alumni throughout its organization. With this partnership, we hope to foster even closer links with the school and nurture some of the boldest thinkers set to create ground-breaking advancements in more sustainable packaging solutions.
In addition to working at Amcor, alumni of the school are also leading the way in ensuring that future generations will flourish. Several have gone on to establish packaging schools throughout the U.S. and the rest of the world.
