Dave Clark, Vice President for Safety, Environment and Sustainability, sees World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April as another opportunity to reaffirm Amcor’s commitment to workplace safety.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work promotes the prevention of injury and accidents in the workplace. It is an opportunity to raise awareness about our safety efforts and achievements, and to continue our work toward Amcor’s ultimate goal of ‘No Injuries’. Customers, employees, suppliers and investors all hold stakes in what Amcor does and how we do it – and that includes how we approach occupational health and safety.

It’s our obligation to do everything possible to provide our people with the right tools, equipment, training, and processes to do their jobs safely. We want everyone who works for Amcor to return home safely, every day.
Because of the nature of our operations, hand injury is one of our greatest workplace risks. We continue to invest in plant and machine safety, worldwide, and, in 2016, as part of a global safety campaign we completed a global upgrade of machine-guarding and a review and enhancement of machine procedures. Thanks to this hand safety campaign, hand injuries were reduced by 50% at all participating sites and led to a considerable reduction of hand injuries related to machinery.

We know that, ultimately, the last line of defence against accidents is each person who works for Amcor and the decisions that they make. With this in mind, we intend to drive hand injury rates down even further with the second phase of our global hand safety campaign, which also focuses behaviour change that encourages our people to make safe decisions in the workplace. Image subtitle: The team at the Pune site in India promoted the importance of hand safety to family and co-workers with a handprints initiative as part of the 2016 global safety campaign. Boards with handprints were placed next to the machines at the production site as a constant reminder to co-workers to protect their hands, every day. Embodying our values safety is something that guides our actions and decisions, every day.

We are proud of our world-class safety performance and Amcor's management is committed to enhancing further our workplace safety performance. Our Global Safety Steering Committee monitors safety performance, actively addresses safety trends, and shares best practices across the business.

We have mandatory global standards for safety, environmental management and security and we ensure compliance with these standards through internal and external audits. Our business groups report monthly to the Amcor Board on compliance with global standards and local rules.

Our co-workers demonstrate our safety values by engaging in safe work practices, contributing to make their workplaces safer, and by looking out for each other. This World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we’ll be honouring the campaign’s intent and we salute all of our more than 30,000 employees who put safety first, every day.
