One of the world’s largest cosmetic companies, L'Oréal, came to us with a challenge – the “All Nighter” setting spray, a popular product in their high-end makeup brand, Urban Decay, needed a sustainability makeover.
A bottle of the iconic “All Nighter” setting spray is sold every 15 seconds and its luxurious packaging can be spotted in millions of makeup bags around the world. Amcor met the challenge of producing a more sustainable package by investing in new heads for existing mono layer machines and creating the bottle using post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. The finished product is a bottle made of 86% PCR and it’s 7% lighter than its predecessor.
The beauty industry is thriving globally and is expected to reach revenues of over US$511 million in 2021 in the US alone, with growth of 4% per year (Statista). Along with growing sales is increasing pressure from consumers for their beauty products to be packaged sustainably. In fact, a recent McKinsey survey found that US consumers want rigid packaging to be recyclable or to include higher levels of recycled content (McKinsey 2020).
More sustainable packaging is becoming increasingly important for this growing market, and it is often presumed that it is difficult to balance sustainability with design. However, Amcor’s new post-consumer recycled Urban Decay “All Nighter” bottle proves that packaging for the beauty industry can look beautiful on store shelves, perform well for consumers and be more sustainable.
Amcor's global footprint and best-in-class innovation mean that whatever the challenge, we can help our customers drive more sustainability and consumer preference for their products.
To help share this sustainability success story, we created a short video in partnership with L’Oréal - watch it here and below.
