Job Description
PURPOSE:
Responsible for providing engineering support to define corrective actions, investigate and implement continuous improvement opportunities. The Project Engineer will assist and/or lead improvement initiative, work with and support all plant operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Investigate, develop and implement activities to reduce machine downtime while increasing process efficiency.
- Review, assess and design safety devices and controls as needed.
- Research, design, and develop controls systems for industrial use utilizing knowledge in engineering and consultation with equipment manufacturers.
- Plan department activities based on production schedules to make optimum use of manpower and facilities.
- Develop and administer web-based control system tools - including SharePoint, Ignition, and related platforms - using Python, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and other modern web technologies.
- Make recommendations for development action; analyze, modify and improve programmable logic controllers (PLC) and human-machine interfaces (HMI).
- Provide design and technical support of PLC based hardware and control systems in a production environment (primarily Allen Bradley with some Siemens and Omron).
- Provide on-going maintenance support and resolution of control system problems, including taking ownership of such problems to completion.
- Work with plant personnel to assist in troubleshooting of manufacturing equipment and control systems problems.
- Manage capital projects from conception to installation as directed by supervisor while following OSHA, EPA, SQF, and local code regulations.
- Interface with outside vendors for the purpose of defining, designing, implementing, troubleshooting and redefining processes.
- Communicate effectively with all departments at the local and corporate level as needed.
- Develop electrical and mechanical documentation, design modifications and programs for equipment.
- Develop, review, and implement work instructions as needed.
- Ensure compliance with the plant policies and procedures including requirements.
- Observe all Safety precautions, Food Safety requirements and Plant Rules to prevent injury to self or others and to prevent loss of material or damage to equipment.
- Follow and wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain good housekeeping and 5S.
- Follow and enforce applicable Food Safety and cGMP polices.
- Perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Possess strong troubleshooting skills.
- Manage projects and time well.
- Understand economics, ergonomics and thermodynamics.
- Understand mechanics-statics and dynamics, hydraulics, pneumatics and material science.
- Understand analog and digital controls and wiring.
- Strong problem-solving and interpersonal communication skills (written and oral) required.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and lead the department to meet organizational goals necessary.
- Strong language and math skills; ability to read and understand manuals, instructions, safety rules and regulations; ability to read tape measures and gauges and figure percentages, volumes and rates necessary.
- Ability to understand cost issues and how they affect operations and to monitor and manage a departmental budget necessary.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of Maintimizer, JD Edwards, Kronos and Rockwell Software packages is preferred.
- Previous experience in injection molding, particularly with Krauss, Sumitomo, and Husky machines and related equipment is preferred.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- College degree in an associated field and/or applied experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, industrial electricity and mechanical and control systems required.
- High school diploma or GED equivalency required.
- Knowledge of PLC and RS Logic to test and/or adjust equipment required.
- Knowledge of TPM; Experience creating and implementing a successful TPM program is preferred.
- Knowledge of safety programs/OSHA regulations regarding Hot Work, Confined Spaces, Electrical Safety, Contractor Safety, Cranes, Hoists and Lifts, etc. required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems and issues that arise.
