Job Description
About the role
Responsible for leading the organization’s energy sourcing and demand management strategy, overseeing both efficient resource utilization and cost-effective procurement. This role combines energy management, supplier strategy, and operational engagement. The senior manager will help drive energy performance optimization across facilities, manage supplier and utility relationships, negotiate contracts, and guide major energy-related capital and procurement projects.
The role requires strong analytical capabilities, expertise in building and utility systems, and the ability to collaborate closely with Sustainability, Facilities, Engineering, Finance, and Legal teams. The manager also drives measurement & verification, reporting, and compliance that support organizational goals in efficiency, cost optimization, and environmental stewardship.
Key Job Accountabilities
Energy Strategy, Performance & Operations
- Lead the organization’s energy and water management programs, including conservation strategies, efficiency projects, and operational improvements.
- Set or advise on energy goals; monitor progress using advanced analytics, dashboards, and energy management systems.
- Maintain and analyze energy datasets, building utility consumption models, and performance trends to identify reduction opportunities.
- Conduct or oversee building walk-throughs, energy audits, and investment-grade assessments to identify energy conservation measures.
- Partner with Facilities and Engineering to integrate energy-efficient design into new construction and capital improvement projects.
- Support measurement and verification (M&V) planning to validate project performance and savings.
Procurement & Supplier Management
- Manage global energy and water procurement projects from strategy development to execution.
- Act as primary point of contact for strategic suppliers, utility providers, and consultants.
- Lead commercial supplier qualification and performance evaluations; ensure alignment with corporate safety, ethics, and sustainability requirements.
- Develop and implement supplier strategies that optimize cost, supply reliability, risk mitigation, and quality.
- Partner with Legal to define contracting strategy; lead negotiation of terms, pricing, and commercial structures (e.g., PPAs, VPPAs, gas supply).
- Serve as the organization’s representative in supplier negotiations, quarterly business reviews, and executive-level updates.
Project Management & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Drive energy-related project pipelines, including scoping, scheduling, budgeting, and cross-functional alignment.
- Collaborate with Facilities, Sustainability, Engineering, and Finance teams to define project objectives and manage progress.
- Perform risk assessments for engineering, commercial, and operational components of proposed programs.
- Provide technical review and oversight for performance contracting and other complex energy projects.
- Support continuous improvement of control strategies, reporting capabilities, and energy-related digital tools.
Financial & Regulatory Oversight
- Manage and forecast energy budgets; provide insights into rate structures, commodity markets, and procurement opportunities.
- Analyze cost impacts, supply-side options, and utility rate structures to guide decision-making.
- Track state, federal, and international policies affecting energy procurement, sustainability reporting, and operational compliance.
- Identify and manage grants, incentives, or financing mechanisms for energy projects.
Communication, Reporting & Engagement
- Prepare and communicate energy performance reports for internal stakeholders and external agencies.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for global energy and water categories, providing market intelligence and guiding long-term planning.
- Deliver executive-level presentations on procurement outcomes, supplier performance, and strategic recommendations.
- Lead internal awareness, education, and stakeholder engagement activities related to energy and sustainability.
Qualifications/Requirements
Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of experience in energy management, energy procurement, facilities engineering, sustainability, or related fields.
- Strong background in analyzing building systems (HVAC, lighting, controls), utility data, and energy performance metrics.
- Experience using energy modeling tools, M&V methodologies, and energy/utility accounting software.
- Demonstrated success in contract negotiation, supplier management, and category strategy development.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, equipment specifications, and technical documents.
- Strong project management skills; ability to lead multiple large-scale projects with minimal oversight.
- Excellent communication skills, including experience presenting to senior leadership.
Preferred
- PMP, CEM, LEED AP, CEP, or similar professional certifications.
- Experience with energy procurement structures such as VPPAs, PPAs, and wholesale market mechanisms.
- Knowledge of regulatory and pricing frameworks in U.S. and international energy markets.
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Resource Management, Sustainability, or a related technical field.
