Job Description

Job purpose

The Maintenance Technician ensures the reliable operation and optimal performance of production equipment by performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. This role is critical to minimizing downtime and supporting continuous improvement initiatives within the facility. The technician will utilize advanced technical skills, including PLC programming and control systems expertise, to diagnose and resolve equipment issues, implement modifications for efficiency, and uphold safety standards in compliance with OSHA guidelines. By maintaining equipment integrity and collaborating with cross-functional teams, the Maintenance Technician contributes directly to achieving production goals and sustaining a safe, high-quality manufacturing environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform troubleshooting and maintenance on a wide range of mechanical and electrical equipment, including but not limited to:

Air compressors, rollers, chains, bearings, seals, sprockets, chillers, gearboxes, pumps, fans, valves, motors, extruders, dies, grinders, winders, and bag machines.

  • Conduct inspections using precision measuring and gauging tools prior to starting work to ensure accuracy and compliance with specifications.
  • Utilize electrical testing equipment to diagnose and repair equipment malfunctions effectively.
  • Execute equipment start-up and shutdown procedures in accordance with company safety protocols and OSHA guidelines.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on production equipment to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems to restore optimal functionality.
  • Program, modify, and maintain PLC systems (Programmable Logic Controllers), including engineering changes to PLC logic and updating HMI (Human-Machine Interface) screens for improved reliability and performance.
  • Calibrate and maintain instrumentation and control systems to ensure accurate operation.
  • Work independently with minimal technical supervision while meeting deadlines and maintaining high standards of quality.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and on-call situations, including working overtime, weekends, and during plant shutdowns as required.
  • Adhere to all safety standards and company policies while performing maintenance tasks.
  • Follow all safety, food safety, and health standards policies and procedures.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team and make sound decisions under pressure in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The individual must be able to perform all essential duties satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation, and possess full operational knowledge of all equipment within the department, including the ability to start, set up, operate, and adjust machinery as needed. A strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity is essential. Candidates must maintain a clean attendance record and have no disciplinary actions within the past twelve (12) months. Additionally, flexibility to work outside scheduled shifts—including overtime, weekends, and during plant shutdowns—is required to meet production demands.

Qualifications include:

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2-5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in extrusion production or similar operations.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, including troubleshooting and repair of industrial equipment.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in PLC systems, Relay Logic, AC/DC drives, and other control system components.
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and ladder diagrams, including their relation to hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting, calibrating, and repairing oil circulating and water heating units.
  • Ability to use precision measuring tools and electrical testing equipment for diagnostics and repairs.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to use Microsoft programs for everyday tasks.

Language & Communication

  • Must be fluent in English with strong communication and interpersonal skills; bilingual ability is a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

Cognitive & Problem-Solving Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects and workloads.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong analytical skills for diagnosing and resolving electrical/mechanical malfunctions independently.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Work Schedule & Flexibility

  • Must be self-motivated and productive with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work overtime, holidays, weekends, and 8 to 12-hour shifts (day or night) as needed.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to stand, sit, kneel, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and crawl for extended periods multiple times per day.
  • Manual dexterity involves wrist action, twisting, pulling, and raising arms at or above shoulder height.
  • Ability to work in warm, humid, and cool climates for extended periods.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses/goggles, hearing protection, steel-toe shoes/boots, face shield, gloves, and face mask.
  • Must be able to safely lift and handle items ranging from 0-50 pounds.

Working conditions

This position is performed in a high-noise production environment with variable temperatures, including potentially hot conditions, and supports a 24/7 continuous operation with 12-hour shifts. All employees are required to adhere to established safety protocols and always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
