Job Description

Position Summary

The Engineering & Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading all maintenance, engineering, facilities, utilities, infrastructure, environmental, contractor management, and continuous improvement activities within the manufacturing facility. This position oversees the maintenance, repair, installation, and improvement of production equipment, molds, support systems, buildings, grounds, and plant infrastructure to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations.

The role provides technical leadership to improve productivity, equipment reliability, operational efficiency, product quality, customer service, and cost performance while developing a highly skilled maintenance team and ensuring compliance with all safety, environmental, GMP, and regulatory standards.

This position reports directly to the Plant Manager.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

Leadership & Operational Support

  • Serve as an active member of the plant leadership team, providing technical expertise, solutions, and recommendations to improve operational performance, efficiencies, product quality, and customer service.
  • Establish departmental priorities and ensure effective utilization of maintenance resources, labor, equipment, contractors, and support services.
  • Lead, manage, and develop maintenance, facilities, electrical/controls, utilities, continuous improvement, and technical personnel to maintain a motivated and highly skilled workforce.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, assess technical skill gaps, and coordinate ongoing employee development and training initiatives.
  • Ensure maintenance personnel are properly trained and aware of potential safety and health risks, including OSHA, GMP, food safety, and company policy requirements.
  • Support production operations through effective troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Provide daily direction and coordination of maintenance personnel in a 24/7 manufacturing environment.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies, procedures, and applicable employment regulations.
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, or irregular hours to support production demands, emergency repairs, or project completion.

Maintenance & Reliability

  • Direct all maintenance activities for the Nicholasville plant, Outside Warehouse and the grounds of both locations.
  • Develop, implement, and sustain preventive and predictive maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime, efficiency, and reliability.
  • Review production requirements with operations leadership to establish effective preventive maintenance schedules and coordinate maintenance activities that may impact production.
  • Ensure all maintenance work orders, repairs, and equipment history documentation are accurately completed and maintained.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to eliminate recurring equipment failures, improve labor utilization, reduce downtime, and lower operating costs.
  • Supervise and assist with repairs, maintenance, and modifications to facility infrastructure and support equipment including HVAC systems, chillers, compressors, electrical systems, water systems, and compressed air systems.
  • Maintain current facility layouts and utility documentation including electrical systems, piping, compressed air, drainage, water systems, and related infrastructure.

Engineering, Capital Projects & Contractor Management

  • Develop, manage, and execute annual capital expenditure projects and facility improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with preparation and justification of capital expenditure authorization requests (CEAs/CEAVs).
  • Coordinate equipment installations, facility upgrades, and construction projects from planning through completion.
  • Solicit and evaluate contractor bids for facility and equipment projects based on cost, quality, workmanship, safety performance, and completion timelines.
  • Administer contractor activities to ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, GMP requirements, confidentiality expectations, and project specifications.
  • Coordinate contractor onboarding requirements including orientation, documentation, proof of insurance, training, and compliance records.
  • Support implementation of energy reduction and sustainability initiatives, including SCADA systems and plant energy management programs.
  • Manage MRO inventory and purchasing activities in alignment with company purchasing policies and budget expectations.

Safety, Environmental & Food Safety Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local safety, environmental, health, fire, and building regulations.
  • Lead compliance initiatives related to lockout/tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, hazardous communication, waste disposal, electrical safety, environmental standards, and safe work practices.
  • Actively participate in plant safety programs and ensure maintenance personnel consistently perform work safely.
  • Lead or participate in accident investigations, corrective actions, hazard identification, and risk reduction initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental initiatives and regulatory reporting requirements related to facility operations.

Budgeting & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and manage maintenance department budgets, including labor, parts, contractor services, utilities, and capital expenditures.
  • Track maintenance expenditures and identify opportunities for cost reduction and operational efficiencies.
  • Recommend and implement programs that improve operational efficiencies, equipment reliability, product quality, labor utilization, and customer service.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on downtime reduction, productivity improvement, energy savings, waste reduction, and operational excellence.
  • Support visual management, lean manufacturing, and continuous improvement methodologies throughout the facility.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical discipline preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education, technical training, and supervisory experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (7-10) years of industrial maintenance leadership experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with high-speed manufacturing equipment and automated production systems required.
  • Blow molding or plastics manufacturing experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing capital projects, utilities, infrastructure, facilities, contractor programs, and environmental compliance preferred.
  • Experience working within GMP, HACCP, SQF, or GFSI regulated environments preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, HVAC, utility, and infrastructure systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, employee development, and team-building skills.
  • Ability to analyze technical problems, collect data, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
  • Strong understanding of preventive and predictive maintenance systems.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, diagrams, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong computer skills including CMMS systems, Microsoft Office applications, SCADA systems, and industrial automation systems.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to effectively present information and technical recommendations to leadership teams and employee groups.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, heat, moving mechanical parts, and industrial equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs/ladders, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be available for emergency response and off-shift support as needed.
  • Ability to work safely in a 24/7 manufacturing operation.
