Job Description
Position level will be determined by the candidate’s experience and qualifications
The Neenah Innovation Center Analytical Laboratory provides chemical and materials testing to support technology research, product development and manufacturing process improvement in North America and globally.Level: Demonstrated abilities and knowledge to perform the below. Typically: requires minimal leadership support to handle intermediate to complex issues, has strong materials knowledge reflected through work, executes requested lab analysis by applying known methods to measure physical properties, supports the maintenance of complex equipment and conducts advanced testing more regularly, develops new test methods, guides other technicians, and works more broadly across the organization to help solve issues.
WHAT YOU GET TO DO
- Independently follow testing protocol, applying known methods to help solve problems
- Follow ASTM and internal methods to complete physical property and barrier testing
- Record test results appropriately and prepare reports for interpretation and suggest alternate tests to help solve issues or highlight material differences.
- Communicate key updates to stakeholders in R&D, Manufacturing and other areas of Operations.
- Be responsible for advanced testing equipment, including cleaning, verification and calibration. Document and follow a preventative maintenance and calibration schedule. Examples of equipment includes permeation equipment, sealers and tensile testers. May be responsible for maintaining equipment in other labs (R&D Lab, Retort Lab, etc). Will be responsible for a higher volume of equipment with more complexity.
- Train other lab users on assigned testing equipment and test methods, including safety protocols
- Maintain clean work area and routinely assist in cleaning and organizing the laboratory
- Suggest and implement improvements to test methods, safety or other general lab procedures. Document the improvement and review changes with other lab technicians.
- Support lab scientists through the use of analytical tools outside of physical testing. Examples include microscopes, FTIR, DSC and GC.
- May act as Lab Captain for one of the testing labs. The Lab Captain acts as a liaison between the lab and the EHS Manager and is responsible for safety improvements, maintaining training records, organization and housekeeping for assigned lab space.
- Work with equipment vendors and other third parties for calibration, repair and equipment purchases.
- Order supplies for the lab and submit documentation through the p-card process
- Assist lab scientists and R&D engineers with problem resolution by suggesting tests and developing and documenting new test methods. Demonstrate an understanding of how physical test results correlate to customer or plant issues.
- Understand production processes and how products are tested in Manufacturing and leverage that understanding between Analytical Lab test methods and plant methods to ensure clear results.
- Lead teams outside of the Analytical Lab (Emergency Response, Medical Response, etc)
- Assist manufacturing with equipment or testing issues
- Prepare standards and indicators for the Analytical Lab and manufacturing
- Mentor other technicians, providing training on more involved and infrequently used tests
- Provide back up for other lab team members.
- Support special projects to advance lab or R&D needs.
- Build strong internal customer support brand through service excellence and positive engagement.
- Maintain processes, standards and metrics to support a customer-focused team.

WHAT WE WANT FROM YOU
- High School diploma or equivalent required. Two-year degree with emphasis on Lab Science, Math or Chemistry strongly preferred.
- 7+ years industry related experience.
- Training in the operation of physical testing and other laboratory equipment. Training is obtained from formal education, seminars, manufacturer sponsored classes, or on the job.
- Conversant in polymer materials and processing terminology
- Basic understanding of measurement variability and Gage R&R
