Job Purpose
The Indirect Tax Manager UK is responsible for monitoring compliance and indirect tax optimisation for the Group’s UK entities and cross-border supplies. The role has responsibility to oversee and advise on indirect tax related projects in the UK and more widely across Europe, including where outsourced to external consultants.
Job Dimensions & Scope
- Amcor in the UK comprises approximately 70 companies, 26 manufacturing sites with both domestic and international supplies. Including a number of corporate entities with limited indirect tax considerations
- Oversight of a number of overseas companies with UK indirect tax registrations
- Circa £1bn turnover
- 5,000 co-workers
- Two Accounting Shared Service Centre (SSC)
- Internal and outsourced payroll provision
Monitor and review of indirect tax compliance and related issues across a portfolio of Amcor UK entities including the support, advice, risk mitigation and continuous improvement within existing processes and of legislative change. This will also include supporting Europe-wide indirect tax initiatives.
Principal Accountabilities
The main missions for the Indirect Tax Manager UK are:
- Managing VAT compliance and reporting
- Review the quarterly VAT returns ensuring timely and accurate submission and payment
- Provide training, support, best practice workshops and promote awareness of VAT requirements across the SSC and Finance teams, offering advice on business activity
- Manage VAT tax audits and liaise with local tax authorities regarding indirect tax queries
- Managing other indirect tax compliance and reporting
- Monitor compliance with packaging taxes e.g. plastic packaging tax, packaging waste recovery notes and extended packaging responsibility, including coordination with outsourced advisors
- Provide payroll tax oversight and advice, including PSA submissions and P11D
- Coordinate ad-hoc payroll tax advice from external payroll tax advisor
- Manage, monitor and mitigate indirect tax risks within internal processes and procedures
- Manage and support HMRC Senior Accounting Officer submission regarding indirect taxes, including maintaining a risk register and ensuring controls operate effectively
- Keep up to date with legislative and case law changes, anticipate their impact on the business and advise on implementing changes accordingly
- Liaise with customs team for any complex cross-border supply queries arising across the EMEA Amcor business
- Proactively support operational projects, assessing potential impact and consequences for indirect tax reporting and the wider business
- Identify indirect tax savings, optimise opportunities and government incentives, grants or levies available
- Liaise and build relationships with key stakeholders within the business and external advisors
Major Challenges and Complexity
Management of internal and external stakeholders in order to:
- Working efficiently across plant, legal entity and tax structures to ensure consistency of reporting across the range of indirect taxes
- Raise awareness of indirect taxes within the organisation to improve overall compliance
- Develop internal network and relationship with the UK plants, central teams and shared service centres in order to support and anticipate requirements, guidance and risk
- Accountable for indirect tax efficiency, assessment and value added recovery of tax incentives and grants
Qualifications, Requirements, Experience and Skills
- Minimum five years’ relevant experience within an accounting firm or in a company role
- Strong knowledge of international cross-border arrangements including VAT treatment
- Understanding of indirect and payroll taxes along with ability to monitor and research other grants and incentives
- Strong experience with a variety of tax operations and ability to drive process improvements
- Knowledge of plastic tax is an asset but not critical
- Ability to model, analyse and feedback complex tax problems and assess risks and opportunities
- Strong business acumen, analytical, research, and problem-solving skills
- Willingness to travel (although expected less than 5% of time spent)
