Sustainability Challenges & Opportunities

1. Challenge: Managing through the global financial crisis (GFC)
Opportunity: Our businesses operate in the defensive product segments of food and beverages and this has resulted in underlying demand being relatively resilient against a backdrop of weaker economic conditions.

2. Challenge: Economic impacts of climate change, sea level rise and extreme weather events
Opportunity: We are reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of our processes and products to create new areas of competitive advantage. We are investing and preparing for climate change.

8. Challenge: Managing growth opportunities
Opportunity: Successful integration of acquisitions to fully realise the strategic, financial and operational benefits.

  • Announced acquisition plans to significantly increase the size of our organisation

Looking Forward

  • We will realise opportunities in our nominated growth segments, such as the announced acquisition of certain Alcan Packaging businesses in FY 2009/10.
  • We will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and participate in regional emissions trading schemes.

Strategy

  • Being a leader in sustainable packaging and supply chain practices by partnering with our customers and suppliers.
  • Continuing our drive to become a customer and market-driven organisation.
  • Using lifecycle analysis data in our product development process to create packaging with minimal environmental impact.

3. Challenge: Changing consumer tastes towards sustainable packaging products.
Opportunity: To become a leader in sustainable packaging, creating new areas of competitive advantage such as supply chain partnerships and product lifecycle assessments.

Opportunity: Successful integration of acquisitions to fully realise the strategic, financial and operational benefits.

Our Performance

  • 53 product lifecycle assessments completed
  • Over 2,000 customer surveys conducted
  • 12 new products with sustainability benefits

Looking Forward

  • We will continually improve our understanding of the lifecycle impact of our products at all stages of the supply chain.
  • We will integrate the product innovation programs of Amcor and Alcan Packaging to enhance our value proposition to customers.

Environment

Strategy

  • Continuing to reduce our emissions, water usage and waste to landfill to meet our targets.
  • Continuing to eliminate spills, fines and prosecutions related to our environmental performance.

4. Challenge: Regulatory and stakeholder expectations for operations with low environmental impact
Opportunity: We are reducing the environmental impacts of our manufacturing processes and products to create new areas of competitive advantage and reduce costs.

Our Performance

  • 2.6% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity (GHG)*
  • 39% reduction in waste to landfill*
  • 26% reduction in Australian water use*

*per unit of production, compared to the FY 2005/06 baseline year

Looking Forward

  • We will continue to work towards our Global EnviroAction targets.
  • We will integrate the operational efficiency programs of Amcor and Alcan Packaging to continuously improve our environmental performance.

5. Challenge: Occupational health and safety
Opportunity: To become internationally recognised for our safe work practices and to share our expertise with our suppliers and customers to help them achieve their own health and safety goals.

Opportunity: Employee engagement and recognition as employer of choice, allowing us to attract and retain the best talent.

Our Performance

  • Over 21,000 employees worldwide
  • 12.5% improvement in our Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR)
  • TravelSafe program introduced for all Amcor Ltd employees

Looking Forward

  • We will continue to improve our Safety Model via a range of standardised management, audit and reporting structures.
  • We will monitor the impact of our cultural change, talent management and diversity programs.

Community

Strategy

Encouraging our sites globally to contribute to the communities in which they operate.

Sustainability Challenges & Opportunities

7. Challenge: Community support for our operations – our social licence to operate
Opportunity: To build effective partnerships and seek constructive dialogue with the communities in which we operate.

Our Performance

  • 15 Amcor co-workers participated in Earthwatch projects across the globe
  • Almost 6 million litres of rainwater can be collected and donated through our Water Giving Project
  • More than A$500,000 donated to community programs

We will continue to conduct a variety of locally led community engagement and investment programs.
